Preparing for the season opening of Glenfinart Walled Garden on Monday, volunteers from Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park were hard at work “doing the weeding” this past week. Thanks go to John, Ian and Roy who were assisted by resident gardener Glyn.
Also on hand was children’s garden creator, Claire and her son Finlay (11) as well as Michael, Chloe (8) and Rebecca (11) from Dunoon and Grace, who brought along Gabriella (7) to help with the weeding in the Kid’s area.,
All the volunteers were rewarded with a feast of Glenfinart Garden’s now famous, home-baking ( as sampled by the stars of Beechgrove!).. pancakes, victoria sponge, fruit loaf and Mars Bar crispies!

Glenfinart Walled Garden reopens for the new season this Easter Monday. The garden will feature a range of activities for all the family, adding to the fun of the Forestry Commission Scotland’s Easter Eggstravaganza at Glenfinart Bay, Ardentinny. A selection of home-baking will be available as well as fun and games for the young ones in the Children’s Garden.
The garden is open 7 days a week, 12.00 – 16.00hrs until 29 September.

Glenfinart Walled Garden’s plans for participating in Forestry Commission Scotland’s Annual Easter Eggstravaganza at Ardentinny on 21 April are well underway. After the winter storms which flooded parts of the garden, the volunteers (with the help of the Payback Team) have been hard at work constructing paths, installing edging in the vegetable plots and constructing raised beds in the polytunnel.
Claire’s innovative Children’s Garden is set to become a favourite amerimold.de with the kids this summer. Joining Bug Hotel, Elfin Cottage, the cycle wheel sculpture and the amazing flying fishes will be real flower beds complete with bed ends!

Over the past couple of weeks, levelling work has been taking place at the garden’s public area. This will provide a picnic site as well as an area for the erection of marquees. The Trust would like to extend its gratitude to Alan Cartledge of Glenfinart Caravan park who kindly loaned a digger and driver. With the garden going from strength to strength, so also are the volunteer numbers. Despite the (sometimes) inclement weather, it’s a wonderful tranquil environment in which to spend a few hours each week. Of course, it’s not all weeding and digging, with many facets to the garden, volunteers can easily find an activity that they are comfortable with, and contribute to the success of the project. Project coordinator Sheila McLean and her colleague Annemarie McLean discussed and evidenced progress to date, in support of their completion report. They were both very impressed with the work that had been done and said that the project had more than met the original success criteria.

Over the past year Dunoon’s Community Payback Team has been contributing to the success of Glenfinart Walled Garden.
Including the regular strimming, weeding, planting, compost collection and general garden maintenance, the Community Payback team, under the direction of supervisor John Gilchrist, has also been laying paths with road *planings and gravel provided by Argyll & Bute Council Roads Department.
Such is the success of the contribution they have made to the garden, this year the team will be allocated a plot to enable them to grow their own produce. They will also receive training from Glenfinart Walled Garden’s volunteers’ coordinator and gardener, Glyn Topliss.
