Bowling Club – Terror on the Turf

img_2880a
Once again Maryjane, Linda and their hard working team excelled themselves with eerie walks, amazing decorations and delicious chilli supper at the annual Ardentinny Bowling Club Halloween Party. There was a Horror Film Quiz with clever cryptic clues and a ‘Guess Who’s Buried in the Graveyard?’ quiz as well as ‘Guess how many Eyeballs in the Jar’.

Pumpkins lined the path to the clubhouse and there were laughing Ghouls, screeching Witches and flashing Skeletons to scare the unsuspecting guiser approaching the club house. The best costume was won by the very convincing caveman. There was music and dancing and a good time was had by all.

Hamilton Cup Ladies beat the storm

On Sunday 11th July, a day on which the weather forecasters had assured us would be mainly fine with odd shower, ladies from 8 different clubs descended on Ardentinny to compete for the Hamilton Cup.

However the omens didn’t bode well as a Gannet which had probably decided it was too rough to fly was sleeping in the car park and stayed there throughout the morning. We don’t do mundane diversions at Ardentinny, just unusual stuff. That Gannet knew what it was about as the forecast shower was heavy with gales and lasted for five hours.

Luckily the ladies were hellbent on enjoying themselves whatever the circumstances and passed the time taking part in a Quiz till Lunch was served. The Quiz, incidentally was won by the team from Abercorn,

At 2pm the green became playable and play commenced much to the relief of the committee and no doubt the participants, who were after all there for the Bowling.

After some hard fought but buff sporting games the final was contested by the triples consisting of J. Scott (Leshmahagow), M.Robinson & L.Dempster (Ardentinny) V A.Strachan (Dunoon Argyll), H. Harrison (Abercorn) & M. Weir (Leshmahagow). With the latter triple coming out on top.

The cup was presented on behalf of Tom Hamilton by D.Menzies.

The Committee would like to thank the following. Western Ferries & Tom Hamilton for their continuing sponsorship of the event. All the ladies who participated and showed so much patience in the trying circumstances. President G.Smith for officiating. Everyone who bought raffles and purvey and last but not least all the ladies who worked so hard throughout the day, you were brilliant.

Oh, and just when they thought they wouldn’t be named, the boobys were won by M.Lewis (Leshmahagow) M.Beattie (Bogleh’a) & S.Marshall (Ardentinny)

Gents Invitation Triples
Robinson Cup

Sponsored by Western Ferries

Sunday 2nd May saw 48 bowlers descend on Ardentinny to compete for the Robinson Cup.

After a short welcoming speech by Ardentinny B.C. Pres. G.Smith, competition commenced with the first prize winner of the day being Curly Black of Colintraive achieving the first toucher. Unfortunately he was sorely disappointed when he discovered the prize wasn’t encased in glass.

The day progressed with varying standards of bowling, accompanied by varying degrees of success but whatever level was attained everyone enjoyed the day and competed in a friendly and sporting manner.

The weather was a bit more benign than usual, although cold with a mix of sunhine and showers, one of which was torrential.

Semi finalists were as follows: J.Adamson (skip), A.Marshall, D.Menzies. Ardentinny B.C. v D.Beattie (skip), A.Kennedy, S.McNab. Upper Cowal B.C. and P.Good (skip), A.Campbell, J.Smith. Pollockshaws B.C. V M.Martin (skip), J.Gilchrist, D.Reynolds. Rothesay B.C., with the teams from Pollockshaws and Upper Cowal making it through to the final.

In a competitive and hard fought final the triple from Upper Cowal retained the Trophy, which was no mean feat considering the standard of bowls that were being played, and they had even less money than that other team that won two in a row!

Margaret Robinson presented the Cup and prizes to the recipients.

Alex Kennedy then gave a short speech of appreciation in which he thanked the Umpire and Score keeper Lettie Dempster and the ladies for all the hard work they had put into preparing and serving the morning coffee, tea and toast, the excellent lunch and for the provision of the afternoon tea and last but not least the overworked drinks dispenser.

Despite making a quick exit back to the wilds of Lochgoil the triple of A.Hammond (skip) D.Mclaughlan, R.Fletcher WILL be getting the booby prizes they so richly deserve sent to them.

The Committee would like to thank the following, WESTERN FERRIES OUR SPONSORS, All the bowlers from kindred clubs who travel from far and wide to participate in the competition IN ALL SORTS OF WEATHER. Also, members who assisted in the preparation of the green and surrounds, members and non members who worked so hard throughout the day. It is greatly appreciated.

A heartfelt thanks to all, without your input the day would not happen.
